Founder & CEO of ALRA, Brett has 20+ years’ experience in the Recruitment industry across primarily the Environmental & Engineering Consulting Sectors. He has worked with Global Top-tiers through to Boutique & Start-ups with a particular speciality in placing Service Leaders & building new business lines.

The main tale.

Born in Byron Bay and having his time split between parents living in the contrast of either the beach side town of Avalon Beach or sleeping in a caravan, Brett learnt perspective from quite an early age. He loved both but he credits seeing both sides as contributing to his drive for success in life. 

Describing himself as “the loudest person you will ever meet” (which he is), life for Brett was defined early on by autoimmune issues (including diabetes, coeliac, thyroid) which taught him that life is to be lived now as you never know what happens next! It put a sharp focus for him on health and wellness (mind, body, soul) and created discipline – an ability to listen to his intuition. Health and wellness come before anything else for Brett, because when that goes, everything suffers. 

This was a big contributing factor for Brett’s creation of ALRA, having worked in companies previously that became detrimental to his health, he wanted to create something that doesn’t just support health & wellness, but enriches it. An agency that he wanted to be part of where you can tread your own path and live a life. 

Well known by people around him for his relentless optimism the biggest thing Brett has learnt from life thus far is that all things shall pass – the good, bad the ugly. Keep rolling with the punches and NEVER quit, as only then do you fail.

Marie has almost 15 years’ experience in the Recruitment & Talent Acquisition sectors with a further 10 in Sales & Marketing within the Hotels & Aviation industries. Her expertise covers 360 Recruitment in agency and for international organisations such as WSP & KBR across the Civil, Geotechnical & Environmental sectors.

The main tale.

Growing up in Mauritius, Marie describes her childhood as beautiful, stating “we didn’t have much but when I look back at it, it certainly didn’t feel like at that time.”

It was part of this childhood that she credits as a defining moment of her life, where after her father was made redundant & she saw the struggle her family was going through she decided then & there she would never sit back & watch, but help wherever she could – including travelling by herself at the age of 15 to town to sell Christmas merchandise on the street to ensure her family was okay. She describes it as “a terrifying experience, it was desperation, but I was determined to make it work.” From then on, she knew that whatever life threw at her, she would be okay.

This determination to help & resolve to be successful has carried through her career & forms much of her philosophy towards recruitment. She enjoys “finding the diamond in the rough and making sure that it has all it needs to keep shining,” and balancing the need to be of service to both candidates & clients to see all the hard work come together like a puzzle.

In a nutshell she believes good recruitment is about “adding value, creating partnerships, challenging the status quo, and doing the right thing by each other.” Her ultimate goal is to provide a holistic recruitment and retention offering, where clients can come to me for recruitment as well as strategy and advice on hiring, retention, equality and diversity initiatives.

• Loving nightclubs but disliking loud noises & big crowds.
• Her love of food & cooking (except desserts, she doesn’t like desserts).
• Travelling to Sopron in Hungary (her favourite place to travel) where she was treated like a celebrity as for some of the residents, she and her companions were the first black people they’d ever met.

Pete has over 10 years’ experience in the Recruitment world across Mining, Engineering, Environmental Consulting & Property Valuations. Pete has become THE recruiter for Valuations Recruitment on the East Coast placing hard to find roles across Commercial, Institutional, Specialist & Residential.

The main tale:

Growing up in Johannesburg (or as Pete laughingly says “big, bad Jo-Berg”), he saw highly different walks of life from a young age but in true Pete style, only remembers the good – his friends, family, climbing the hill across from his house and checking out all the incredible animals & bugs.

Migrating to Australia kickstarted his love of travel and immersing himself in other cultures. Whether this is living in the small city of Suwon in South Korea teaching English or hiking between coastal towns in Mexico (sneaking sketchily past compounds with heavily armed guards), he credits his travels with some of the biggest perspective shifts in his life.

This has led to his hard-working, optimistic and relaxed approach to life where his philosophy is “it’s a big game. Consistently play to the tactics that you believe will get you the right result. If you’re going to go off script, do so with confidence and make peace that it could all fall apart. That’s part of the fun.” 

Knowing that the recruitment world is often like this is a big part of why Pete joined the ALRA team stating that “good recruitment is the risk / reward of trying to build something big which can be challenging, but it’s made easier when you’re surrounded by consistent support to be better and achieve personally and professionally.”

• Training for and running a marathon where nothing ever goes to plan, but having a plan is infinitely better than the alternative.
• The ridiculously loud clicking sound he can make with his mouth. He’s never met anyone who can click louder. Prove him wrong.
• How to make a little catapult-like structure using your fingers to shoot projectiles at high speed.
