Environmental Scientist / Consultant – Contaminated Sites (1–3 yrs)
Contaminated Land, ENVIRONMENTAL
Sydney, NSW
85 — 120
- Field-heavy role with genuine hands-on contaminated land experience
- Local project footprint – no CBD commute
- Strong mentoring from senior contaminated land specialists
Environmental Scientist / Consultant in Contaminated Sites, join a growing Sydney-based team that’s building out its environmental capability within a long-established engineering consultancy. This role exists because the work is there – not speculative growth, not bench-building – real projects that need another set of capable hands on site.
You’ll spend most of your time in the field across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains, supporting investigations, remediation works and validation programs tied to active developments, infrastructure and construction sites. This is a practical role for someone early in their career who wants to learn contaminated land properly – not just write reports from a desk.
There’s a clear intent to transition work currently handled by geotechnical teams into a dedicated environmental function. You’re part of that shift.
The Role
You’ll support senior consultants and project managers across the full contaminated land lifecycle, with a strong bias toward site execution.
- Soil, groundwater and surface water sampling
- Logging boreholes and test pits
- Liaising with drillers, labs and site supervisors
- Acid Sulphate Soils work on major ongoing infrastructure projects
- Oversight of remediation and validation works (including asbestos in soils)
- Reporting back to PMs and contributing sections to PSI, DSI and validation reports
- Regular site presence (average ~3 days per week)
If you’re on site for the day, you can take a company vehicle home – simple, practical, and appreciated.
Projects
- Major long-term infrastructure works (including airport-related programs)
- Large subdivisions and urban developments
- Construction sites and remediation programs
- Clean-up validations and dig-and-dump remediation oversight
Team & Environment
You’ll be part of a growing Sydney environmental team, backed by a well-established interstate contaminated land group. Senior support is hands-on and technical, with people who’ve come from top-tier consultancies and know how to train juniors properly.
This is not a corporate, policy-heavy environment. It’s practical, delivery-focused, and suits someone who wants to get good quickly.
What You’ll Bring
- 1–3 years’ experience in environmental or contaminated land consulting
- Degree-qualified in Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering or similar
- Comfortable with fieldwork and site-based roles
- Solid attention to detail and willingness to learn
- Full Australian working rights
