This is a rare opportunity for a Senior Associate or Special Counsel Corporate M&A lawyer to join one of Melbourne’s top mid-market Corporate & Commercial practices. This is a genuine Partnership pathway with a firm that balances high-quality mid-market M&A work with a daily target of just 5.5 hours per day, and a remuneration structure that allows you to earn as much as a Partner while building your practice.
There are several Partners in the Corp/Comm team, and they are all enthusiastic about growing the Partnership in this practice. The Senior Associates and Special Counsels have complete autonomy to take ownership of their own transactions, and choose which juniors will support them through their deals.
Between the current Partnership, the client base encompasses virtually all industries (including private and listed public clients), on the buy-side and sell-side, with an active pipeline of work acting for local Australian and international clients based in the US and EU. The bulk of the work coming through is Corporate M&A transactions, and around 30% is commercial and advisory work. Deals are typically in the $50m range but often up to $250m (currently running 3 deals above $100m).

You’ll have support to build your own profile and clients, with a generous bonus structure that rewards every matter you introduce, whether you handle it personally or refer it internally. The benefit is that you are rewarded for having a partial practice and can even earn as much as a Partner, without having BD as a core requirement of your role. So, while you are on the journey of building your own client base, you receive the benefits when things are going well, but you aren’t held responsible when your BD efforts don’t come to fruition.
